Recent Statistics Show Face and Chest Most Popular Sites for Plastic Surgery
According to statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the year 2007 showed that the most common plastic surgery procedures, for both men and women, were those of the face and chest.
Nationwide facial procedures like the Beverly Hills facelift increased 14% for women and 16 percent for men from 2006. Similarly, chest procedures like Beverly Hills breast augmentation for women increased 6% and pectoral implants for men increased 8%. Further, reconstructive breast reduction for women increased 2%, which is a significant difference from the 9% decrease reported last year. Male breast reduction increased 7%.
ASPS President Richard A. D’Amico, MD said that “while 91% of plastic surgery procedures are performed on women and 9% are performed on men, it is interesting to see the rate of increase is comparable in both.”
Further, non surgical cosmetic procedures for the face increased considerably for both women and men. Radiesse™ increased 123% for women and 134% for men, laser skin resurfacing increased 32% for both women and men, Restylane®, Hylaform®, Hylaform Plus® and Juvederm™ increased 35% for women and 24%, and Botox® increased 14% for women and 4% for men.
Triple board-certified Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Mehr is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons who is also certified in Dermatology and Mohs Micrographic Surgery being one in five in the United States who holds these certifications, takes part in collecting statistics through his Beverly Hills cosmetic surgery practice.
ASPS procedural statistics are gathered through the first online national database for plastic surgery procedures, Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS). This data, combined with the annual survey sent to American Board of Medical Specialties certified physicians most likely to perform plastic surgery, results in the most comprehensive census on plastic surgery procedures. Region Dictates Most Popular Types of Plastic Surgery
In the latest statistics released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, numbers show that the U.S. demand for types of cosmetic procedures varies from region to region. Experts suggest that the biggest influencing factor in this respect is based on weather. Considering the extreme weather differences varying from region to region, it makes sense that here in California and other warmer states, where it is warm and sunny all year round, many more people are inclined to undergo figure-oriented procedures. Warmer weather means fewer clothes. Furthermore, California being the home to Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Hollywood, all centers of fashion, entertainment, and other image-related industries, people are much more body-conscious, asking for breast augmentation, breast lift, breast implant removals, liposuction, pectoral implants and tummy tuck procedures more than anywhere else in the U.S. Los Angeles plastic surgery has set a precedent for worldwide plastic surgery centers. Finding a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon is as easy as talking a stroll down Rodeo Drive. At the same time, in other colder regions, where people are more covered up, these areas tend to see the most facial plastic surgery procedures overall. The New England/Mid Atlantic region had the highest numbers of lip augmentation, with 29% of 23,585 estimated procedures, and nose reshaping, with 29% of 284,960 procedures. However, the demand for cosmetic, minimally invasive procedures across the country saw little regional differences. It's estimated that 9.9 million of the procedures, such as chemical peels, were performed by ASPS member surgeons or other board-certified physicians in 2007, up from 9.1 million in 2006 and 5.5 million in 2000. But they do tend to be most popular in the New England/Mid Atlantic and Mountain Pacific regions. The latter, which again includes California, particularly Los Angeles and Beverly Hills cosmetic surgery , had the nation's greatest numbers of a variety of procedures, including Botox, hyaluronic acid, laser leg vein treatments and laser hair removal. Of course these are nationwide comparisons. Even within the same region, the variations of cosmetic surgery varies according to personal taste as well. A Los Angeles plastic surgeon is still very likely to perform facial and neck procedures just as a Boston plastic surgeon is likely to perform a figure-oriented procedure like a breast augmentation or liposuction.
